NewHolly Community

It takes more than new housing to create a livable neighborhood. Throughout the NewHolly redevelopment, careful attention has been given to initiatives and activities that will promote positive interaction among neighbors.

The NewHolly Neighborhood Campus is a key part of the strategy. A group of non-profit partners are working together at the campus to provide essential community services. These include a learning center, a Seattle Public Library branch, classrooms for South Seattle Community College, Head Start, a pre-school, youth tutoring, and employment programs.

The centerpiece of NewHolly Phase II is the 318-unit Elder Village, a special place designed with the needs of the community’s elders in mind. The Village was developed in partnership with two nonprofit agencies who specialize in housing and care of the elderly, the Providence Health Systems and the Retirement Housing Foundation.

The Elder Village consists of three facilities: Providence's Peter Claver House and the Retirement Housing Foundation's Esperanza Apartments and Park Place Assisted Living Facility.

The character of the neighborhood is expressed in the variety and richness of its cultures and its economic diversity. Immigrant families learning English and getting a foothold in the United States share their viewpoints and traditions with residents of the original neighborhood, first-time home buyers and more affluent home owners.

Residents are intentional in their efforts to promote activities and attitudes that strengthen their community. In leaving behind its identity as an inward-facing neighborhood of low-income residents, NewHolly has forged renewed links with the surrounding community and is sparking other community development activities nearby.

Together with Sound Transit LINK light rail, the transformation of NewHolly is sparking a transformation of the Othello business district. The neighboring Van Asselt community center, run by the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department, also offers recreational opportunities for residents of NewHolly and beyond. Plans are also underway to significantly expand this building in the near future.
