Relocation outcomes

During the counseling process, each household expressed a first preference for their relocation. Residents' initial choices were as follows:

  • 254 households indicated they wanted to return to live in the new neighborhood.

  • 255 households preferred to accept a Housing Choice voucher in order to seek privately-owned rental housing.

  • 166 households stated their first choice was to buy a house.

  • 76 households chose to permanently relocate to other SHA communities.

  • 51 households identified their first choice as leaving public housing to live in non-subsidized housing.

  • 30 households did not express a preference.

Those who chose to relocate permanently from Holly Park were the first to move. To the greatest extent possible, residents whose first choice was to stay at NewHolly remained on-site.

By April 2002 the process for all of the 832 original Holly Park households was completed. Even though the third phase of the redevelopment is still in process, the needs of all original households have now been met.

Eighty nine percent of those whose first choice was to return to NewHolly were able to do so (227 out of 254 households). In many cases, it was these residents who helped to retain the cultural assets of the original, diverse, neighborhood and welcomed new residents as they arrived.
