Guiding principles for redevelopment

A community vision for the future of Yesler Terrace

The Yesler Terrace Citizen Review Committee met ten times between October 2006 and October 2007 to develop the policy direction for the redevelopment project. The result of the committee's work is a set of definitions and guiding principles around social equity, economic opportunity, environmental stewardship and one-for-one replacement housing.

The committee adopted these guiding principles in September 2007. They were approved by Seattle Housing Authority's Board of Commissioners on December 6, 2007.

A report entitled "Definitions & Guiding Principles: Working Toward a Community Vision" is available here in PDF format. (This is a large file and may take time to download.) The report also includes introductory material and a minority report submitted by Seattle Displacement Coalition Coordinator John V. Fox and Yesler resident Kristin O'Donnell. The complete text of each guiding principle as passed  by the CRC is also available using the links below.

In addition to the guiding principles, the CRC also developed a series of planning concepts. These were received by the Board of Commissioners on December 6, and will continue to be refined as the planning proceeds.

The planning concepts and the report containing the guiding principles have also been translated into the predominant languages other than English that are spoken at Yesler Terrace. These translations are available at the SHA Management Office and by using the links below. (Please note these links are to documents that are formatted as 11 x 17.)
