Emergency shelter opens
at Yesler Gym
SEATTLE—November 30, 2004—A
three-way agreement between agencies has paved
the way for the operation of a cold-weather
emergency shelter for homeless people to open
in the gym at the Yesler Terrace Community
Center. The first night of operation was

introduces PorchLight Insider
SEATTLE—November 19, 2004—A
new e-newsletter will help SHA's partners to
get their clients into housing more quickly by
providing tips and information on navigating
the sometimes-difficult bureaucracy involved.
Beginning this month PorchLight Insider
will serve case managers and housing
organizations who work directly with
low-income people seeking housing from SHA.

New rentals for lease at Rainier Vista
SEATTLE—November 22, 2004—New
apartments in the redeveloped Rainier Vista
are now available for lease. The eleven two,
three, four and five-bedroom units range from
1,000 square feet to 1,700
square feet. They are located close to the
neighborhood's shopping area and convenient to
downtown, I-5, and I-90. Nine units are
designated for incomes 30 percent and below
the area median income and two units are
designated for incomes 60 percent and below

Popkin
Development receives recognition
SEATTLE—November 15, 2004—At
their recent meeting, Seattle Housing's Board
of Commissioners acknowledged and thanked
Henry Popkin, principal of Popkin Development,
for his firm's significant contributions to
the development of NewHolly. Popkin
served as development consultant with Seattle
Housing to redevelop the first two phases of
NewHolly, a thriving neighborhood recognized
throughout the country as a model of urban

Habitat for Humanity, recently contributed an
Op-Ed piece to the Puget Sound Business
Journal, in which she discussed Habitat's
partnership with SHA. So far,
26 Habitat families have moved into homes they
helped build in NewHolly. Funding permitted,
17 more will have that opportunity within the
