Design Commission approves High Point Plan

SEATTLE—November 30, 2002—The Seattle Design Commission recently gave an enthusiastic endorsement to the plans for the High Point redevelopment. The commission praised the urban design approach taken and the vision embodied in the plan. They especially appreciated the reintroduction of the historic street pattern and the respect shown in the plan for the existing topography. Their approval sets the stage for consideration by the Seattle City Council of the contract rezone associated with the project. This is expected to take place early in 2003. SHA hosts public hearing on waiting list preferences

SEATTLE—November 20, 2002—In a policy initiative aimed at streamlining bureaucracy and placing needy households more quickly, the Seattle Housing Authority has proposed new policies to govern its waitlist priorities. The new policy would give preference to extremely low-income applicants, those earning less than 30 percent of the area median income. A public hearing on the policies will be held on Thursday, November 21 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the agency's PorchLight Housing Center. For details on the new policy, click here.

New acquisitions add to affordable housing stock

SEATTLE—November 19, 2002—SHA's inventory of affordable housing is growing by 37 units, all of them large family units in Seattle's Central District. In addition to preserving this affordable housing, the acquisition also helps to fulfill replacement housing goals for Holly Park, Lake City Village and Yesler Terrace. The units will be financed with bonds issued by the housing authority. Some units will also receive on-going subsidy through the use of Housing Choice vouchers assigned to specific units. HUD recognizes  SHA human services programs through grant awards

SEATTLE—November 18, 2002—Providing on-going community and supportive services to residents is a high priority for the Seattle Housing Authority. With city and county cuts in many areas, the services provided through recent HUD grants become even more significant. The federal government has recently awarded the housing authority four separate grants that total over $1 million. They will fund a range of services, including job placement, case managers in SHA high rises and home ownership assistance. For details on the grant awards received, click here.
