26, 2007—Developed in 1968, HUD’s Section 3
program gives housing authorities the legal basis to
provide or find jobs for residents. It also sets
guidelines for awarding contracts to businesses in
construction projects that receive certain types of
federal assistance.

Conserving
energy, one twist at a time
SEATTLE—October
22, 2007—Starting at Yesler Terrace, Seattle
Housing Authority embarked on its largest electricity
conservation effort to date in October, putting into
action
an ambitious plan to replace more than 40,000
traditional incandescent light bulbs with efficient
compact fluorescent lights (CFLs).
Board of
Commissioners approves 2008 budget
SEATTLE—October
17, 2007—With funding restored for one community
program, and additional funds set aside for the
development of expanded services for East African
residents,
the Seattle Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners
unanimously approved the agency’s 2008 budget at
their September meeting.
High Point wins
Smart Communities award
SEATTLE—October
3, 2007—The Seattle Housing Authority’s High
Point neighborhood was one of only nine development
projects in Washington State to be honored this past
September
with a 2007 Governor’s Smart Communities award.
