New grants support services to residents
Focus on home-ownership assistance
SEATTLE—January 6, 2005—Two
recent grant awards to Seattle Housing Authority will help to provide
important services to residents to assist them toward
self-sufficiency.
SHA will
receive a total of $261,441 in a grant from the U. S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development to support SHA’s Family Self
Sufficiency program. This program provides residents living in
public housing or using a Section 8 voucher with an opportunity to
accumulate savings. Participants establish and accomplish
self-directed goals related to education, employment and home
ownership. The grant will support 4.5 staff positions to assist
residents, including one position devoted exclusively to helping
them to become home owners.
An $8,000
grant from the Washington State Housing Finance Commission has also
recently been awarded. It will support SHA’s efforts to provide
counseling for residents regarding homeownership and predatory
lending.
According to
Community Services Manager John Forsyth, “These grants make a big
difference in our ability to help SHA residents address all of the
issues around home ownership and self-sufficiency. We appreciate the
support from both HUD and the Washington State Housing Finance
Commission.”
