blossoms on Arbor Day
SEATTLE—April 24, 2008—Community
members gathered at Rainier Vista on April 24 to
celebrate Arbor Day by planting both living trees
and a sculptural tree that celebrates the stories of the
community. The sculpture, provided through the efforts
of Iron Monkeys Collaborative and Ignition Northwest,
incorporates a bench with panels that detail the story
of the nearby Whirligigs that were created by Asa Mercer
Middle School students with help from SouthEast
Effective Development Arts.
Second phase of
redevelopment construction at Rainier Vista extended
SEATTLE—September 12, 2006—Seattle
Housing Authority is adding a year to the schedule for
construction of Phase II of the Rainier Vista
redevelopment in order to account for delays due to plan
changes and to mesh more effectively with Sound
Transit's construction schedule.

Community
celebrates Rainier Vista Park opening
SEATTLE—August 15, 2006—Community
members and kids of all ages came out to see and play in
the new Rainier Vista Park at the dedication ceremony on
July 20. Thanks to more than 200 volunteers and
financial sponsors the park was completed and ready to

Mayor Greg Nickels, Neighborhood House, Seattle Housing

community partners and businesses who helped build it.
The Dedication and complimentary picnic meal is on July
20 at 2:30 p.m. in Rainier Vista Park, 29th Ave. and S.
Genesee.

SEATTLE—June 15, 2006—You

SEATTLE—April 17, 2006—By
the end of June, Central Park at Rainier Vista will be
open for residents to enjoy. It will offer play areas
for kids, plenty of picnic areas and will serve as a
central gathering place for the community. Volunteers
are encouraged to join in on a volunteer work party at
the park on Saturday, April 22, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. For more

SEATTLE—January 5, 2005—The
first group of Rainier Vista homes has now been leased, with
almost all of them occupied by residents of the original
Rainier Vista development. Through the outstanding efforts
of Walsh Construction and the Rainier Vista leasing team,
the first group of Rainier Vista homes has now been leased.
The units are almost all occupied by residents of the
original Rainier Vista development and families were able to

Kroc Center may
be added at Rainier Vista
SEATTLE—March 7,
2005—A generous bequest from the Ray and Joan Kroc
Foundation may make it possible for a significant
new community center to be built at Rainer Vista.
The Kroc's, who were the founders of the McDonald's
restaurant chain, are providing $1.5 billion for
community centers across the country. The center
being considered for Seattle would cost around $30
million and would include facilities for learning,
recreation and the arts. For details,

Construction
progress continues at SHA's HOPE VI redevelopment sites
SEATTLE—April
11, 2005—SHA’s HOPE VI
redevelopment sites continue to show tangible progress
every day. Residents will be moving into the first new
homes at High Point in early summer, while the last
phase of NewHolly is moving toward completion and
infrastructure work at Rainier Vista is nearly done. To

SEATTLE—January
21, 2004—With
the financial closing on the first phase of Rainier Vista
completed, the construction of rental housing will soon
begin on the site. A
total of $40.6 million has now been secured for construction of 184 rental
units on the west side of Martin Luther King, Jr. Way S.
The financial closing took place on December 31 and
involved multiple investors, including Northwest
Securities as underwriter. For more information,

SEATTLE—August 24, 2004—As the Seattle Housing
Authority begins marketing land at Rainier Vista for
private developers to build new homes for sale, the
newly-published Rainier Vista Design Book will help ensure
that the new homes complement the rental housing and
community facilities SHA and others partners are

SEATTLE—April
28, 2003—In
a feasibility study commissioned by SHA, the consulting
firm Bay Area Economics (BAE) found that SHA's current
plan for redevelopment of the Rainier Vista site was the
most feasible of the options considered. SHA agreed to the
study as part of a settlement reached with project
opponents in December 2002. The study explored various
possibilities for replacing on site all of the 481
low-income units originally at Rainier Vista. The current
plan calls for replacing 410 units on site, with 71 units
replaced elsewhere. For details on

SEATTLE—August
13, 2003—A
celebration today marked the official beginning of
construction on the Rainier Vista redevelopment. Sponsored
by SHA, Walsh Construction Co., architects Tonkin Hoyne
Lokan and others, the celebration brought together more
than 300 residents and well-wishers to commemorate the
event. To

SEATTLE—October
23, 2002—Federal
judge John Coughenour has declined to grant an injunction
that would have halted progress on the redevelopment of
Rainier Vista. In a 14-page ruling handed down on Friday,
October 18, Coughenour asserted that the public interest
would not be served by delaying demolition of 133 vacant
buildings necessary for Phase I of the redevelopment

SEATTLE—December
24, 2002—After
an intensive four-day mediation process, all the parties
to the Rainer Vista lawsuit that was stalling work on this
project have now agreed to a settlement. Demolition work
on the project, halted on December 12, will now proceed.
The settlement agreement brings together the concerns of
organizations and individuals, including the Friends of
Rainier Vista, the Seattle Displacement Coalition, the
City of Seattle, the housing authority and HUD. For
