Getting Involved
There
are many ways for residents to get involved with other SHA residents to
address common concerns and interests, whether in their immediate community or throughout
the agency. Click on the links below to discover how you can get more involved.
Resident
Councils Many Seattle Housing
buildings or communities have resident councils that are recognized by both the
Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and the Seattle
Housing Authority as organizations that represent residents' interests. These "Duly Elected Resident Councils" are also
known as DERCs. The following Low-Income Public Housing communities currently
have Duly Elected Resident Councils:
-
Ballard House
-
Barton
Place
-
Beacon Tower
-
Bell Tower
-
Cal Mor Circle
-
Cedarvale House
-
Center Park
-
Denny Terrace
-
Holly Court
-
Lake City House
-
Olive
Ridge
-
Olympic West
-
Stewart Manor
-
Tri Court
-
West Town View
-
Westwood Heights
-
Yesler Terrace
Resident councils generally plan activities and
events for their buildings, and look for ways to make their
buildings friendlier and safer. Sometimes they plan potlucks, social
events and educational events. Check the bulletin
board in your building for news about your resident council or view

Resident Action
Council (RAC) The Resident Action Council
(also know as the RAC) is organized to maintain a viable resident
organization that is representative of the residents living in SHA's
28 high rise buildings. The RAC considers issues of concern to
these residents of low-income public
housing and membership is open to anyone living in these buildings. The
RAC's board of directors is composed of representatives from
each of the 28 buildings. For more
information about the RAC and their meeting times, visit their
office at 2600 S. Walker Street in Seattle or call them at
(206) 322-2257. You may also e-mail the RAC at
searaccouncil-owner@yahoogroups.com. The
RAC also maintains a discussion Web site open to members on Yahoo.

LIPH
Joint Policy Advisory Committee (JPAC) The
Joint Policy Advisory Committee has been in existence since 2000 and
includes residents who meet with SHA staff on a quarterly basis
to review major draft policies. In the past the JPAC has advised SHA about
policies concerning pets, rent, smoke detectors, fraud, house rules,
occupancy standards,
the Community Service and Self-Sufficiency Requirement, among others. The JPAC
also provides input about SHA's major work plan, called Moving To
new Ways. Each duly elected resident council is able to have a
representative and an alternate as members of the JPAC. Housing
Authority staff also encourage residents from communities without
this type of council to participate. For more information about the JPAC
contact SHA's
Community Services Administrator, John Forsyth at (206) 615-3579 or by
e-mail at
jforsyth@seattlehousing.org.

Senior Housing Program Advocates II Residents
of Seattle Senior Housing have formed an advocacy organization
called the SSHP Advocates II. Any resident of the 23 senior
buildings may consider themselves a member. There are no dues,
meetings are held at least once a year and a newsletter is circulated
to the buildings every three months. The
Advocates II acts as a voice of the residents in addressing their
concerns with SHA. The organization has four
officers and five board members who volunteer to serve. This is
an informal group. Current officers
