How immigration status affects housing assistance

Chinese | English | Russian | Somali | Spanish | Vietnamese
Federal law requires Low Income Public Housing residents and Section 8 participants to be U.S. citizens or U.S. nationals or to have eligible immigration status to receive financial assistance. This brochure explains what to do if you do not have legal immigration status.


Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) tenants:
Reporting changes in income or family members

All changes in income (increases and decreases) or household members must be reported in writing within 10 business days of the change. You can download the form to use, "Changes of Income or Household Conditions" (SHA 385-PL), using the link below. Please mail, fax or bring it to PorchLight within 10 days of the change. You may need to include some additional forms, depending on the change (see below).

Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) lists of units for rent

Housing Choice (Section 8) voucher-holders may download and print lists of units for rent in the Seattle area. The lists, which are updated every Friday, typically by noon, are also available in the PorchLight lobby. Please note that these listings do not include every unit available to voucher-holders in Seattle, but rather those units that some landlords have chosen to list.

The following abbreviations are used in the listings:

Housing Choice voucher-holders who are thinking about moving must turn in a moving packet at least 60 days before the month they would like to move.

Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8)
utility allowance schedules (effective 4/1/2008)

Tenants in the Housing Choice Voucher program are expected to pay 30 percent of their income for rent and utilities. In calculating rent amounts, a "utility allowance" is used to determine typical utility costs for each tenant.
