Seattle Housing to join CityClub in presenting housing forum

SEATTLE—April 30, 2009—The Seattle Housing Authority has signed on to co-present a CityClub forum that will look at the changing environment of housing in Seattle. The luncheon forum, "Hard Questions About Housing—the Challenges and Opportunities of the Next Decade," will take place at Rainier Square from noon until 1:30 p.m. on Friday, May 22. Registration opens at 11:30 a.m.

According to Executive Director Tom Tierney, "We are excited about this forum—housing issues have a significant impact on our community and they merit close scrutiny."

Among the questions to be addressed at the forum are these:

  • Is housing still part of the social safety net?

  • Foreclosures have affected many families, and as more people lose their jobs, some face the specter of homelessness; how do experts in the housing field see the challenges and opportunities of the coming decade?

  • What new pressures will deteriorating economic conditions place on the local housing market?

  • Is the Ten-Year Plan to End Homelessness still viable?

  • What can we expect for the Housing Levy this fall?

Audience members will be encouraged to raise other questions.

The forum will be moderated by former Mayor Norman B. Rice. Panelists will include Betsy Lieberman, Executive Director of Building Changes; David McCracken, UW professor emeritus and housing activist and volunteer; Linda Hall, Development Director of YWCA of Seattle/King/Snohomish County; Adrienne Quinn, Director of Seattle's Office of Housing; and Heyward Watson, Chief Executive Officer of Impact Capital.
