U.S. House of Representatives considering HUD appropriations for FY2004

SEATTLE—July 17, 2003—The House Appropriations Sub-Committee marked up the VA-HUD Appropriations bill on July 15, keeping subsidy for low-income housing at about the same levels as last year. The bill is expected to go to the full House Appropriations Committee soon. In response to the Bush administration's recommendations for the budget,  the Center on Budget Priorities has released a report suggesting that the level of funding needed for existing Housing Choice Vouchers (Section 8) has been dramatically underestimated. The Center estimated that as many as 184,000 households could lose their vouchers if their predicted shortfall is accurate. This could affect as many as 500 households in Seattle.
