SEATTLE—March 7, 2005—In
early February, President Bush presented his draft of
the 2006 federal budget to Congress. The message for
low-income people in this budget is not a hopeful one.
Housing cuts from past budgets are solidified, and
additional cuts to programs serving the needs of
low-income people will stretch agencies to respond.

Kroc Center may be added to
Rainier Vista
SEATTLE—March 7, 2005—A
generous bequest from the Ray and Joan Kroc Foundation
may make it possible for a significant new community
center to be built at Rainer Vista. The Krocs, who were
the founders of the McDonald's restaurant chain, are
providing $1.5 billion for community centers across the
country. The center being considered for Seattle would
cost around $30 million and would include facilities for
learning, recreation and the arts.
