HUD Inspector General issues audit of SHA Welfare-to-Work Program

SEATTLE—May 29, 2003—The Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development today issued an audit report criticizing the Seattle Housing Authority's administration of the Welfare-to-Work Section 8 Tenant-based Assistance Program. The audit suggests that SHA "did not provide adequate management oversight over program administration." According to SHA, the program has made it possible to expand the number of households receiving assistance by over 750. "We welcome the auditors' suggestions," said Executive Director Harry Thomas, "because they will help us to do a better job of administering this program."
