Kaiser Permanente purchases land from Seattle Housing Authority in Yesler neighborhood

Media Release

SEATTLE – January 7 – Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington is continuing to ensure Washingtonians have access to convenient, high quality care with the land purchase in Seattle’s Yesler neighborhood. The purchase of the 1.6-acre property from the Seattle Housing Authority is the latest demonstration of Kaiser Permanent’s commitment to transform health care to meet the diverse needs of Washington residents and communities throughout the state.

The purchase is part of the $1 billion investment Kaiser Permanente announced in 2017 to deliver the best care, convenience, and experience for patients across the state through new and upgraded facilities and expanded virtual care channels. With the goal of leading the industry in delivering the future of health care – where, how, and when patients want it – Kaiser Permanente is committed to health care equity and accessibility for its more than 700,000 members and countless communities across the state.

“This strategic development furthers our mission of integrated care and meaningful partnership in our communities,” said Janet O’Hollaren, chief operating officer of Kaiser Permanente Washington. “The Seattle Housing Authority has a thoughtful plan to invest in the Yesler neighborhood, and we’re pleased to contribute to the health of this evolving community.”

The evolution of health care that brings connections to care in each patient experience is a key consideration in the development of new facilities. Kaiser Permanente continues to reimagine its physical space to integrate in-person and virtual care options.  Kaiser Permanente is working to determine the timeline for development and available services based on the needs of the Yesler community.

“The presence of Kaiser Permanente as a health care provider, employer and Yesler community member is significant,” said Andrew Lofton, executive director of the Seattle Housing Authority. “Kaiser Permanente has a demonstrated commitment to health care equity and to the communities where they have facilities. They are exactly the type of partner SHA and the Citizen Review Committee envisioned when creating a master plan for a new Yesler that will enhance the lives of our residents and attract others to the community.”
