First phase of Scattered Sites sales nearly complete
SEATTLE—November 11, 2005—Since February, Seattle Housing has sold 64 of 71 Scattered Sites public housing units identified for sale, and purchased 44 replacement units in neighborhoods throughout the city, as part of a three-year plan to adjust the mix of housing in its public housing Scattered Sites portfolio.
An additional 27 units of replacement housing will be purchased in the near future.
By changing the housing mix, SHA will be able to run the program more cost effectively and provide housing better suited to resident needs.
Proceeds from the sales were used to purchase the replacement units. Units sold to date include 33 single family houses and 31 units in duplex, triplex or multifamily structures. Replacement purchases range from a triplex next to and across the street from some existing Scattered Sites housing to a 24-unit apartment building.
Seattle Housing Authority is actively looking and evaluating other properties to find the desired bedroom mixes and accessibility.
One resident was able to purchase the Scattered Sites home in which she and her family had lived for the past 18 years. All of the residents of the other units that were sold have been relocated to other housing in SHA's inventory and continue to pay an affordable rent.
The agency has also requested permission from HUD to sell another 76 Scattered Sites units. Once that permission is granted and residents can be relocated to other public housing, these units will go on the market.
