Sen. Patty Murray introduces bill that would help children experiencing homelessness

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray visited the Seattle Housing Authority's Yesler community on December 6 to preview her Affordable Housing for Educational Achievement Demonstration Act and hear about local efforts to help children experiencing homelessness.
“We are seeing some exciting things happen in this region when we break down barriers and silos between agencies and have people work together,” said Murray.
The senator’s bill would create a federal grant program to encourage schools, housing authorities and community partners nationwide to work together to ensure students and families experiencing homelessness have the services and support they need for children to succeed in school.
The roundtable discussion included SHA Executive Director Andrew Lofton, SHA Community Services Administrator Rachael Steward, SHA Creating Moves to Opportunity program manager Jodi Speer, SHA resident Seble Kifleyohannes, Building Changes Director of Policy and Strategic Communications Daniel Zavala, Northgate Elementary School Principal Dedy Fauntleroy and Mockingbird Society’s Network Representative Alyssa Downing.
