Special COVID-related payments don’t count as income for rent calculation

July 15, 2020

The extra $600 per week in unemployment benefits is scheduled to end July 31 (although because that’s a Friday the last payout will actually be the week before) and most people have received their one-time stimulus payment. There are proposals for a future return-to-work bonus but no legislation has passed authorizing that. As a reminder, these special short-term or one-time payments do not count as income for rent calculation. If your income has dropped otherwise, you should request an interim review to see if your rent needs to be adjusted down. Regular employment payments do count and need to be reported.
