A canvas of community
This month, we’re featuring SHA resident artist Linda and “Home is Where the Heart Is,” a painting inspired by memories of family, home and the idea that what makes a home special is what happens inside.
For resident artist Linda, home isn’t about how big it is or how it looks. It’s about the memories and people who fill it.
Her painting, features an English-style cottage covered in roses. The piece was inspired in part by Linda’s memories of raising her two youngest sons in a small two-bedroom house on Maui.
Despite its size, Linda remembers the house as a gathering place for her sons’ friends and family and a place filled with happy memories.
“A 10,000 square foot mansion can feel empty and uninviting if it’s not filled with joy, love and laughter,” Linda shared. “Whereas a 500 sq. ft. house might be small and cramped, but it can be a place of happiness and fulfillment.”
Linda began painting a few years ago after an art instructor started offering classes at her SHA community. When the instructor’s grant ended, Linda and other residents decided to keep creating together.
“Even with no instructor, we are all seeing improvement in our artistic endeavors,” Linda said. “And we are having fun.”
