Breaking news in the world of recycling! Beginning January 1, 2020, plastic bags and plastic wrap will no longer be accepted in the recycling bin.

What do you mean by plastic bags and plastic wrap?

Plastic bags include grocery bags, produce bags, bread bags, zip-top bags as well as shipping pillows and bubble wrap. Plastic wrap is typically used in packaging for things like paper towels or toilet paper, as well as dry cleaning bags and any thin, flexible plastic.

Why are plastic bags and plastic wrap no longer allowed in the recycling bin?

Plastic bags and plastic wrap can get tangled in the processing equipment which can lead to shutdowns at the recycling facilities. Stopping the equipment to remove the plastic slows the process down and poses a safety risk for workers.

What should I do with my plastic bags and plastic wrap?

You can do a couple of things.

  1. Take your clean and dry plastic bags and plastic wrap to a drop-off location to be recycled. Most retail or grocery store locations offer this service.
  2. Put them in the garbage

The best thing you can do in the future is  avoid using plastic bags and plastic wrap when you can!
