Community members break ground on Hillclimb construction

SEATTLE — June 23, 2014 — Seattle Housing Authority today celebrated a ceremonial groundbreaking for the city’s newest hillclimb. It will connect Yesler Terrace with Little Saigon and the International District. The new pedestrian pathway along the 10th Avenue South right of way will include a staircase, access ramps and a gathering plaza with expansive territorial views. Construction is expected to be completed in summer 2015.

The 10th Ave S Hillclimb will create a convenient pedestrian connection between Yesler Terrace, Little Saigon and the International District. Where once there was a steep bramble-choked hillside dividing these neighborhoods soon there will be a pathway pening access to shopping, restaurants and transportation options, creating an even more vibrant community,” said Andrew Lofton, executive director of the Seattle Housing Authority.  “With the community’s input and generous support, we can build something that will truly draw us closer together.”

The Hillclimb received financial assistance from the JPMorgan Chase Foundation, the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the City of Seattle.

“We are proud to support the Seattle Housing Authority and the Hillclimb, which is consistent with our mission of bringing people and communities together,” said Phyllis Campbell, Chairman, Pacific Northwest, JPMorgan Chase & Co. “This Hillclimb will become a neighborhood asset for decades to come, and help create a stronger community.”

Seattle Housing worked with community groups including the Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority and with residents of the Yesler Terrace and Little Saigon neighborhoods to design the Hillclimb with 24-hour lighting, a gathering plaza, accessible ramps, vibrant artwork and open sight lines. Additional features may include spaces for community gardening in the future.
