SEATTLE—September 27, 2004—Mayor Greg Nickels, City Council President Jan Drago and King County Executive Ron Sims will dedicate the second phase of the International District Village Square development, 725 S. Lane St., at a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony/Grand Opening celebration beginning 5:30 on September 29. The formal program begins at 6:00 pm and will feature performances by the Seattle International Lions' Dance Team, Asian Pacific Islander Seniors Alliance and One World Taiko.
The mixed-use complex contains a public library focusing on multi-lingual materials, a 16,000 square foot Parks Department Community Center and gym, 6,000 square feet of retail space, a 76-stall underground parking garage and 57 affordable rental apartments for families. Residents will also be able to take advantage of a health clinic and other services located across the street at the ID Village Square.
SHA provided construction capital and project-based Housing Choice Vouchers to make 14 two-bedroom and 17 three-bedroom units affordable for households with incomes below 30 percent of the area median income.
These units are considered replacements for old Holly Park public housing units.
The building is a non-smoking facility. Leasing began in May. Already, 27 of the 31 replacement units have been leased by low-income families.
The apartment will be named Domingo/ Viernes Apartments, honoring Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes, who were murdered at union headquarters in Pioneer Square in the 1980s for their efforts to clean up graft and corruption in the Alaska Cannery Workers Union.
Kubota Kato Chin/Kovalenko Hale Architects joint venture were the project architects. Marpac Construction was the general contractor.
