HistoryLink, City of Seattle partner to explore agency's roots, significance
SEATTLE — April 8, 2014 — A reception at the new Museum of History and Industry on April 2 marked the beginning of a year-long commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Seattle Housing Authority.
HistoryLink provided historical research services to expand materials about the agency on their website. HistoryLink researchers are creating a detailed chronology, a photo archive, a detailed essay and six travelling display panels. The panels are on display throughout the month of April at the Housing Authority's headquarters building at 190 Queen Anne Ave. N. Research is funded by the Housing Authority and a $20,000 grant from the City.
With a state charter and city operating agreement in place, the new Seattle Housing Authority board held its first official meeting on April 11, 1939. Beginning with the construction of Seattle's first public housing at Yesler Terrace in 1941, the Housing Authority has since created 6,300 units of public housing and now provides housing to more than 29,500 people in the City of Seattle.
