Seattle Housing Authority Commissioners adopt new plan

SEATTLE—September 1, 2005—Seattle Housing is one of about 30 housing authorities across the country participating in the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Moving To new Ways program. This program allows SHA to test innovative methods to improve housing services to better meet local needs.

Seattle Housing’s Board of Commissioners adopted the coming fiscal year’s plan this summer. Several actions in the plan will affect current and future SHA residents and community members. Some of these actions include:

  • Creating and bringing new public and workforce housing online at High Point and Rainier Vista.

  • With nonprofit partners, building new housing for seniors and people with disabilities at Rainier Vista and High Point.

  • Continuing to reconfigure the Scattered-Sites portfolio by selling some units and replacing them with others that are more efficient to manage and maintain.

  • Beginning homeWorks, a five-year capital program involving bond- and tax credit-financed projects to renovate 22 public housing high-rises, including comprehensive rehabilitation of building systems and common areas.

  • Tailoring the Housing Choice Voucher Tenant-Based Assistance Program to meet local needs.

  • Continuing to strengthen programs that give residents access to computers and the internet.

  • Planning for the redevelopment of key mixed-use sites at Rainier Vista and High Point.

  • Continuing the successful mental health crisis intervention and case management program in the public housing high-rises that was expanded during SHA's fiscal year 2005.

About 40 people, including residents and members of the general public, attended the public hearing about this MTW plan on June 8.
