When he finishes his shift as a solid waste worker at SHA, Corey Sampson heads to Rainier Beach High School where he has been a football coach for 20 years. This fall Corey was named Coach of the Year by the Metro League.

This is Corey’s second time being awarded Coach of the Year by Metro League. He was previously honored in 2011.

Corey played college football at Northeastern Louisiana University in the mid-1990s. He hoped to enter the NFL draft, but due to an injury his plans changed and he applied to become a high school football coach.

“In the last two years, we went to two All-American Bowls and sent some kids off to Division 1 schools. The satisfaction of a kid getting a scholarship offer and being able to go to college is the benefit of being a coach, and it’s great,” said Corey.

In 2018, Corey was the first African American head coach to take an intercity school to the State Championship. The last time Rainier Beach High School played in the State Championship was 1988.
