Tips on how to prepare for emergencies

The City of Seattle has identified 18 hazards that carry the most significant risk to the City. These hazards include winter storms, landslides, flooding, and earthquakes. To prepare yourself for any emergency, SHA's Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability team will be sharing monthly emergency preparedness tips. If you have questions,  email SHA's Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability team atrcst@seattlehousing.org

Emergency contact information

Developing a family plan is an important step towards making sure that everyone knows what to do in the event of a big disaster. It's important to keep SHA informed about any updates to your contact information so SHA can communicate with you during emergencies. If you are a participant in the Housing Choice Voucher program, update your contact information. If you are a resident living in an SHA building, update your contact information

Your plan can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be, but it should include the following information:

  • Identify a place to meet in case you cannot get to your home
  • Write down contact information for family and friends that you may need to contact
  • Identify an Out Area contact that can serve as a relay point for family communication (It may be easier to get through on a long-distance line when local systems are overwhelmed)
  • Be familiar with alternative routes home, including public transportation options
  • Plan for children, pets and any medical needs
  • Sign up for Alert Seattle to get emergency alerts and notification

To start recording your family plan, you can use the Be Prepared template to record important information. The template is available in multiple languages.
