Volunteers help build Central Park at Rainier Vista

SEATTLE—April 17, 2006—Residents involved in the redevelopment process at Rainier Vista said that one of the most important things they would like to see in the new community is a park where their children could play, they could meet their neighbors and have gatherings with friends and family.

Volunteers and community partners have been working hard to make this happen. By the end of June, Central Park at 29th Ave. S. and S. Genesee St. in Rainier Vista will be open for the neighborhood to enjoy.

About 50 volunteers from the neighborhood, CityYear, Young Heroes, Neighborhood House, Impact Property Services, SvR and Seattle Housing Authority helped spread topsoil at a work party this past weekend.

More volunteers are encouraged to come help build the park at another work party on April 22 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Activities will include spreading topsoil and installing plants. It will also give volunteers the opportunity to meet some of the people who call Rainier Vista their home.

The south end of the park will open during the first week of June and will offer the most activities for the neighborhood. It will have play equipment for kids, picnic tables, benches and beautiful landscaping.

The north end of the park, consisting mostly of grass and picnic areas, will open closer to the end of June in order to give the grass more time to grow.

Seattle Housing Authority thanks the following partners for their contributions to help build Central Park: SAFECO, Neighborhood House, City of Seattle's Department of Parks and Recreation, The P-Patch Trust, Starbucks, Lowes Hardware, Plantscapes, The Stewart Lumber & Hardware Company, QFC, Krispy Kreme and Tully's.
