Click here May 28, 2021 ![]() Mithun Seattle Chinatown International District PDA and Community Roots Housing to build new homes for families at YeslerThe Seattle Housing Authority has partnered with Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority and Community Roots Housing to build new homes for families at the intersection of 13th Avenue and E. Yesler Way. Financing for the project, a mixed‐use building with 156 units of affordable apartments and childcare, closed on May 15, 2021. The project broke ground on May 19, 2021 and will be completed in early 2023. SHA announces new executive directorThe Board of Commissioners of the Seattle Housing Authority named Rod Brandon as Executive Director, to replace Andrew Lofton who retired on May 7 after 17 years with SHA. Brandon has served as SHA’s Director of Housing Operations since 2010, leading the agency’s largest department with approximately 400 staff serving more than 17,000 residents in approximately 8,500 housing units. He has extensive career experience in creating innovative policies and programs, building critical partnerships, managing large projects, operations and budgets, and developing diverse workforces. Retired SHA Executive Director Andrew Lofton receives civic honorsAndrew Lofton, Executive Director of the Seattle Housing Authority, retired on May 7 after 47 years of public service, 17 of them with SHA. He recently received two significant tributes recognizing him for his dedication and accomplishments. To honor Andrew’s long career of public service, the Mayor and Seattle City Council declared May 7, 2021 to be Andrew Lofton Day. Read the full text of the proclamation. On April 21, 2021 Andrew was presented with the 2021 Carla Okigwe Lifetime Achievement Award from the Housing Development Consortium. ![]() Thank you, Seattle Fire mobile teams Partnering with the City of Seattle and the Seattle Fire Department mobile teams, Seattle Housing Authority was able to host 129 on-site clinics at SHA properties to vaccinate nearly 3,000 individuals against COVID-19. SHA prioritized buildings with high populations of people of color, seniors and other vulnerable residents who have statistically been more susceptible to the virus and have experienced greater barriers to health care, including access to vaccination. SHA to test new technology to cut carbon emissions, energy use in water heatingSHA and the CIty of Seattle have partnered to ensure that affordable housing will be included in a new national program aimed at cutting carbon emissions and energy spent when heating water in buildings. A project slated for SHA’s Bayview Tower will install a redundant heat pump system to the current electric resistance equipment to test advanced technology. The field test will serve more than 100 units at the property, “The test of the new Mitsubishi product offers the chance for us to continue to provide hot water for our tenants while increasing efficiency two to four times over what we would see with a conventional product,” said Bobby Coleman, administrator of SHA’s Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Division. ![]() SHA teens support elementary school students through library program The Seattle Public Library employed 10 paid teen interns living in SHA housing for the Learning Buddies program, giving elementary students 1:1 virtual reading and math support.
