Family Unification Program

Family Unification Program

The Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Family Unification Program aims to prevent family separation due to homelessness and to ease the transition of youth who are no longer eligible for foster care because of their age and may as a result become homeless. A housing subsidy is paid to the landlord on behalf of the participating household. The household then pays the difference between the actual rent charged by the landlord and the amount subsidized by the program.

The program aids

  • Families who are in imminent danger of losing their children to foster care primarily due to housing problems

  • Families who are unable to regain custody of their children primarily due to housing problems
