Free digital skills classes for tenants

As technology has become more widespread in our daily lives, people with disabilities often face barriers that reduce or prevent access to the internet. To help address this, the Seattle Housing Authority provides technology support to tenants though its computer labs and Digital Navigation program that includes specialized support for people with disabilities.

The Special Technology Access Resource (STAR) Center computer lab at SHA’s Center Park location is completely wheelchair accessible and the equipment includes screen readers, a braille embosser and voice recognition software.

SHA and The Seattle Public Library recently hosted a free iPad digital skills class for SHA tenants with disabilities. SPL’s Library Equal Access Program (LEAP) Lab offers assistive technology resources including a refreshable braille display and a CCTV magnifier, plus all of SPL’s PCs are equipped with JAWS and ZoomText software for those who are blind or have vision impairment.

Nine SHA tenants were randomly selected from the class to receive their own iPad, along with further accessibility training from SPL staff and support enrolling in the Affordable Connectivity Program from SHA’s multi-lingual Digital Navigators.

To participate in one of SHA’s free digital skills classes or receive support through its Digital Navigation program, please email digitalequityhelp@seattlehousing.org or call 206.615.3580.
